Furniture Measuring Guide

Measure the room. Then measure the route.

A beautiful piece works only when it reaches the room and leaves enough space to live around it. Use this guide before ordering a sofa, table, bed, dresser, console, chair set or outdoor grouping.

1. Start with confirmed product dimensions

Record width, depth and height from the product page. For expanding tables, recliners, sleepers, lift-top pieces, swivels and furniture with opening doors or drawers, record both the closed and fully used dimensions. Check whether measurements include projecting hardware, arms, headboards, cushions, feet or handles.

For a set, list every separate piece. If the delivery route is tight, ask for carton dimensions when available. A finished product can fit a room even when its rigid carton cannot make a turn. If a needed number is absent, contact Goods Spring instead of estimating it from a photograph.

2. Map the intended footprint

Use low-tack painter’s tape to mark the full width and depth on the floor. Add the space needed for daily use: chair pullback, drawer travel, door swing, reclining clearance, cabinet access and walking paths.

Open nearby doors and drawers while the outline is in place. Check outlets, vents, radiators, baseboards, switches, windows and floor transitions. For a bed, plan mattress access and working space for nightstands or a dresser.

Look upward too. Compare total height with windowsills, art, sloped ceilings, wall lights and mounted televisions. Measure the usable wall between trim rather than the wall from corner to corner.

3. Follow the full delivery route

Walk from the exterior arrival point to the final location. Record the narrowest clear opening at every exterior door, interior door, hallway, landing and elevator. Measure with doors open, noting hinges, handles, closers and security hardware that reduce clearance.

On stairs, record width, ceiling height, landing depth and diagonal turning space. For an elevator, record the door opening and interior width, depth and height. Confirm loading-dock hours, elevator reservations, access codes and building rules before purchase.

The delivery service may not include carry-in, stairs, assembly or packaging removal. Read the Furniture Delivery Guide and the order-specific service details.

4. Test how the room moves

A floor outline should survive a normal day. Pull dining chairs back as someone would to sit. Open storage doors and drawers fully. Walk between the furniture and the nearest doorway. Test reclining or sleeper clearance. Check whether a console leaves safe ventilation and heat clearance according to its instructions.

Keep manufacturer clearances and anchoring instructions authoritative. Where tip-restraint or wall-anchoring hardware is supplied, plan a suitable location and follow the instructions.

5. Complete the fit check

  • Confirm product dimensions and, when needed, carton dimensions.
  • Test a full-size floor outline with doors, drawers and motion open.
  • Record the narrowest doorway, hall, stair, landing and elevator measurements.
  • Confirm building access and the purchased delivery service.
  • Check the selected finish, size, set and included pieces.
  • Resolve missing measurements before checkout.
